BlackBerry Ringtone support added in version 4.7 / 20 December 2003.
The Ringtone Converter has a specific midi conversion utility designed to support BlackBerry handsets.
At the time of writing, the Blackberry handsets are not Polyphonic, but use a mobile midi format usually associated with midi ringtones for their tones.
As a result, most 'standard' midi files do not play correctly.
The Ringtone Converter output is optimized for the BlackBerry device to maximize the volume of the ringtone where possible, whilst retaining a distinct ring signal.
Creating a ringtone for the Blackberry
To create a ringtone for the Blackberry simply save the ringtones you like as a 'BlackBerry midi' file using the 'File' -> 'Save current ringtone to file' option and select the 'BlackBerry Midi File' option.
You will then be asked where to save the midi file, enter a name and click 'Ok' to save the file to your PC.
Downloading the ringtone to your Blackberry
To download the new BlackBerry midi file you need to use the web browser built into the phone.
The first step is to make the files available on the web.
You can do this using the Wap Server built into the Ringtone Converter, or by uploading the midi files to a web server such as the free space often provided by your dial up ISP.
Then, the second step is to point your BlackBerry browser to the URL to the Url given by the Ringtone Converter, or the Url address of the web server you have uploaded the midi file to.
To do this simply click on the browser on the Blackberry, then click the side wheel again and select 'Go To...'
Your handset will download the file, then offer to play, and save the file as a new ringtone or alarm.
By using the Ringtone Converter to create BlackBerry midi format files, you can be sure the files are created within the specification limits for the handset, and are optimized for volume where possible.
